Latest Update on City

The Honda City is one of India’s premier sedans and a hugely popular choice in its segment. The City was first manufactured in the year 1997 at Greater Noida. It launched officially in 1998 with the parent brand. The premium compact sedan comes with six petrol variants in tandem with three diesel variants. It can comfortably seat 5 people with 506 litres of boot space.

Interior space is good although it does not have the split folding rear seat feature. The City feels planted, stable and plush enough for comfortable long drives on the highway while it is excellent for hassle-free city driving as well. The 1.5 litre petrol i-VTEC engine is a tried and tested marvel and this four cylinder mill dishes out 119 BHP and 145 Nm. Power figures increase with the engine being smoother, powerful and refined. The 1.5 litre i-DTEC diesel mill makes the same 99 BHP and 200 Nm while offering greater refinement and BS-VI compliance too. NVH levels are better while the car feels agile while driving. Fuel economy of 24 kmpl for the diesel engine is more than welcome while performance has been slightly compromised at the altar of fuel economy for the petrol counterpart. Mileage of 17.8-18.4 kmpl for the manual-CVT models is good although not the best in class. The 2020 City gets Honda Connect with voice command, G-Meter for measuring gravitational force caused by your driving style and a 7-inch full-color TFT LCD panel, a first in the segment.

It's very good car in this segment. It's stylish, gives good mileage and is a value for money car. The only thing that should be improved is the diesel engine noise. A little noisy.

Dear Team, This complaint pertains my private car (vehicle registration number:UP32FH6233 purchased in the year 2014 from Stallion Honda Lucknow. Since purchase,my car has been regularly serviced only at Stallion Honda's workshop and has always been under a very good maintained condition. In the month of April'2018 i got my car serviced at Stallion Honda.(invoice of the same attached for your kind reference). Recently,my brother alongwith his family went to Delhi and while returning to Lucknow on 21st June'2018 all of a sudden, car stopped at Agra Express highway at around 3:30pm. Car was running at a constant speed of approx 90-100km/hr. Hope you can imagine our condition where we were stuck at expressway, alongwith ladies and family members,mid-day,47 degree temperature and no help around.... After some time we got help from patroling van and arranged our car towed to Agra at MGR Automobile Pvt Ltd. workshop. Rather than returning to lucknow my family had to stay at Agra. After vehicle inspection,we were intimated that Engine Block part of the engine broke while vehicle was running and we were handed over an estimate of Rs.1.5lakh. PLEASE ADDRESS BELOW QUESTIONS: 1. If there was any defect in above part of the engine, why i was not intimated by Stallion Honda at the time of vehicle service in April'2018.Do they only perform superficial check-up on the car while servicing leaving vital check-ups un-attended and risking life of customers?? 2. There is certain life of engine parts and when it comes to the vital parts of the engine, durability is much more.Atleast we purchased Honda car because of its superior quality parts and performance and after this case we were lest disappointed as mere in the tenure of approx 5 years how can a major engine part result in a failure??this leaves a big questionmark on the quality of spare parts of HONDA CARS. 3.This incident could have resulted in a fatal road accident where my car could have dashed from behind from another speeding vehicle at expressway. Why should i not move to consumer court and file a case against Honda Cars India and Stallion honda demanding vehicle repair expense, towing charges, familt stay at Agra hotel, taxi charges from Agra to lucknow as all these expense are incurred just because of sheer neglegence and pathetic service of Stallion Honda and inferior parts quality provided by Honda cars. My vehicle is at MGR Automobile Pvt Ltd. workshop,Agra and I am facing a lot of trouble in local commuting. This is affecting my business as well. EXPECTING A PROMPT REVERT FROM YOUR SIDE AND A QUICK SOLUTION TO MY PROBLEM.

Honda City Expert Review

Honda City

The Honda City has been the most successful sedan for the company in the Indian market, offering the right combination of brand value, features, looks, and performance. The 5th generation model is now available in the country.

How’s the Design?

The new Honda City retains its sleek and stylish design. However, there is a bigger nose and more chrome along with a wider stance. The headlamps are now LEDs and look flashy along with the DRLs for company. The diamond-cut 16-inch alloy wheels are a nice touch although they are slightly smaller than desired. The design is more global in its appearance if you consider bits like the shoulder line going from the front fender to the tail light and the body creases below the doors and blacked-out taillights with LED components. There is also a spoiler for the boot lid which looks attractive. The grille and narrow air dam now ensure superior aerodynamics according to the company.

How does it perform?

Diesel 1498 cc 97.89 BHP 200 Nm
Petrol 1498 cc 119.35 BHP 145 Nm

The i-VTEC petrol comes from the fourth generation although there is a new head with twin-overhead cams as well. There is slightly more power and the same torque. The engine feels fast and responsive enough to drive and likes being pushed as well. The revs go up to almost 7000 RPM which means a lot of power on tap. The performance however is not as smooth as you would expect owing to the surge of torque lower down on the power band. Yet, the engine is the most powerful in the category and you will love driving it almost endlessly. The smooth gearboxes are also a treat to use, especially the 6-speed manual transmission system. However, the City is not as fast as you feel and is slower than some other rivals. This happens due to the 185-section tyres. Refinement is excellent however with the sedan being silent while idling and also while cruising on the highways. There are almost zero vibrations which is a major feat for Honda. There is a CVT automatic unit which is good for leisurely and refined driving styles. However, despite improvements, it still does not come across as inspiring upon rapid acceleration. The i-DTEC diesel engine is not as good as the petrol although it offers great torque. It sometimes feels a little strained and the 6-speed manual transmission system does not quite make it as effortless to drive as its petrol counterpart. The engine is quite refined and fuel efficiency is also great.

How’s the mileage?

• Diesel Manual- 24.1 kmpl
• Petrol Automatic- 18.4 kmpl
• Petrol Manual- 17.8 kmpl

How’s the driving experience?

The Honda City offers good driving experiences overall with increased rigidity and ultra-high-tensile steel. The car is now lighter by 4.3 kg although kerb weight has increased by 46 kg. The wheelbase remains the same while there is a wider track. The Honda City has good driving dynamics and corners splendidly although there is some body roll along with under-steer setting in sometime earlier than other rivals due to the narrower tyres again. The steering still does not offer as much feedback as you would want. The ride is however plush and undulations and potholes are absorbed well by the suspension system. The refined suspension system makes its presence felt and is one of the best things about the Honda City. There is a lot of ground clearance as well and the steering is weighted much better without being flimsy or excessively lighter. It also makes the City a great car to drive anywhere in the city. Grip is not as much as you want although it will not be an issue.

What’s the interior like?

The Honda City’s interior is all about superior detailing. You will find great placement of things like wing mirrors for example and there is a blind spot in the instrument console that will come on once the left indicator is flipped. This is really handy to say the least. There is great visibility overall and the dashboard looks smart and you get a sunroof with loads of storage spaces inside as well. The City is the benchmark in terms of overall boot space at 506 litres and the back seat is extremely spacious. Knee room and shoulder room have increased further and this is the only sedan where five people can journey together in total comfort. Height has come down slightly for the car although overall headroom has gone up. The front seats are uber comfortable and wide along with offering great visibility and a plush ride.

Tech and Infotainment

There is no wireless charging although you do get a 7 inch digital instrument console and a premium steering wheel. There is an 8-inch touch screen infotainment setup which could have been placed better although it functions nicely and is paired to an eight speaker audio system with Android Auto, Web Link Plus, Apple CarPlay and Alexa. It has 32 connected car technologies via Honda Connect’s app and these include everything from remote start-up and geo-fencing to tracking and a lot more.

Safety Equipment

The Honda City is one of the safest cars in the segment with its 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating and plenty of safety kit including six airbags. It has features like seat-belt warning, child seat anchorages, anti-theft engine immobilizer, speed-sensing door locks, central locking, and a lot more.

Which variant to buy?

The entry-level V variant makes for a decent pick with its 15-inch alloy wheels, LED DRLs and projector headlights. It also comes with the 8 inch touch screen and other connectivity features including Alexa, Honda Connect telematics, keyless entry, climate control, rear AC, engine start/stop button, powered side mirrors, telescopic and tilt steering, rear and front armrests, height adjustment for the driver’s seat and more. It also has four airbags, brake assist, ABS with EBD, hill-start assist, ESP, traction control, TPMS, and a rear view camera. That is plenty of kit for those on a budget. The mid-range VX is costlier but you do get the sunroof, curtain airbags, 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, eight speakers, and the 7 inch digital instrument cluster and some other additions. The ZX is costlier than the VX but not as much. You get add-ons like automatic LED headlamps, LED fog lamps, dashboard and upholstery touches, remote power window and sunroof functionality, lane-watch camera, automatic folding mirrors, front footwell ambient lights, rear sunshade and four one-touch power windows. The VX variant mostly has everything that you will need although the entry-level version is excellently equipped for the price.

Which cars compete in this segment?

The Honda City competes with the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna and now the Skoda Slavia and the Volkswagen Virtus. The Honda City has one of the biggest touch screens in the segment while offering great connected car technologies along with Hyundai in the Verna. Yet, it wins brownie points for Alexa integration. The City is excellently equipped with features and so is the Hyundai Verna. The City does miss wireless charging and ventilated front seats like the Verna. Honda has several advantages over most of its rivals. The pricing is close to the Verna and others in the segment while the Ciaz still remains more affordable. However, it does not have as many features as well.

People also ask For

  • Which model of City is best?

Considering the base V variant, Honda has given it some really decent features and it does not quite seem like the entry-level model. It gets 15-inch alloy wheels, projector headlamps, LED DRLs, the 8-inch touch screen system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Honda connected car features, Alexa remote functions, keyless entry, steering-mounted controls, powered side mirrors, engine start/stop, rear AC vents, climate control, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, cruise control, driver’s seat height adjustment and front and rear armrest.

The mid-range VX variant is priced over the V model, getting additional features including the sunroof, curtain airbags, 8 speakers (four extra tweeters as well), 16-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, leather-wrapped gear lever, 7-inch semi-digital instrument console with digital tachometer, rear parking proximity display, G-meter and some more.

Now, the top-end ZX model is not that costlier over the VX and comes with added features like the lane-watch camera, LED fog lamps, automatic LED headlights, gloss wood garnishing for the dashboard, remote power window and sunroof functionality, automatic folding mirrors, rear sunshade, one-touch power windows, leatherette upholstery and front footwell ambient lights. The mid-range VX variant is the pick of the lot since it offers almost everything that buyers seek in this segment at a slightly lower price.

  • How much does a City cost?

The new Honda City is priced between Rs. 11.28 lakh to Rs. 15.03 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi) for the petrol variants while the diesel variants are priced between Rs. 12.88 lakh to Rs. 15.23 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi)

The ZX CVT Petrol and ZX MT Diesel are the top models and they are priced at Rs. 15.03 lakh and Rs. 15.23 lakh respectively (ex-showroom, New Delhi). They offer several additional features over the mid-range model including lane-watch camera, LED fog lamps, automatic LED headlights, gloss wood garnishing for the dashboard, remote power window and sunroof functionality, automatic folding mirrors, rear sunshade, one-touch power windows, leatherette upholstery and front footwell ambient lights.

  • Is City a good car?

The 2020 Honda City is a good car to own and drive. It offers several advantages for buyers including increased space at the rear, ample storage space inside, plush upholstery and interiors, an attractive design and of course, advanced safety features including six airbags and a host of other technologies. The 2020 Honda City also gets a bevy of technological features including the 8-inch touch screen system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with the 7-inch full color TFT display. It also gets connected car features and telematics along with Amazon Alexa remote compatibility.

The electric sunroof is another value addition to the luxurious compact sedan. The petrol and diesel engines are powerful and refined while being BS-VI compatible and offering lower NVH levels. Agreed, boot space could have been slightly more and there is no rear-seat folding functionality but overall, the car makes for a value proposition by all means.

  • Is Honda City better than Maruti Suzuki Ciaz?

The Honda City competes directly with the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz in its segment. It is better than the Ciaz in several respects including the fact that it has more powerful 1.5 litre engines and is higher, longer and wider than the latter. It also has a 6-speed transmission system for all models as compared to 5-speed transmission systems for the Ciaz. The Ciaz is cheaper with better mileage but the City has better safety and technology features, right from the base model onwards.

It also gets an electric sunroof along with the G-Meter, connected car technology with Amazon Alexa remote compatibility and several other advanced tech features which are absent in the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz.

  • How reliable is City?

The Honda City is one of the most reliable premium compact sedans out there in the Indian market today. It drives reliably with excellent handling, good steering responses and ample agility. The car has witnessed improvements in its structural rigidity, ensuring a safer drive and better handling at the same time. It feels stable and well planted in corners and is ideal for long drives on the highway courtesy its punchy engines and good performance. The refinement and lower NVH levels are major plus points along with the comfortable suspension system and ample interior space, especially at the rear. Safety features are top-notch, covering several technological advancements, blind-spot rear views, six airbags and a lot more.

This is a true driver’s car with solid structural rigidity, a bouquet of advanced safety and driver assistance features, new-age connectivity and security telematics and of course, excellent performance along highways and city roads alike. Bad roads, potholes or uncomfortable conditions- the Honda City will absorb them all in its inimitably plush style.

Honda City Vs. Competition

The Honda City offers more length, width and height while being a bigger car than the Hyundai Verna. Boot space is also more for the 2020 Honda City and the new version comes loaded with tech. However, Hyundai also has BlueLink connectivity features for its Verna along with ventilated seats, wireless phone charging, cooled glove box, smart trunk and rear USB charging port which are not available for the Honda City. Both are equally well-equipped in the engine and performance department although the Verna offers a fun petrol 1.0 litre turbo option as well. The Verna also offers slightly higher fuel economy than the 2020 Honda City while being slightly costlier on the top end. The base variants also miss out on several safety and security features along with advanced tech for the Hyundai Verna. Honda offers more kit for the base variant.

The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is cheaper than the Honda City and is priced between Rs. 8.40-11.33 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) while the City comes for Rs. 10.89-14.64 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Ciaz offers better mileage with its base petrol model offering 20 kmpl while the Honda City base petrol offers 17.8 kmpl and this goes up to 18 kmpl for the CVT. The base diesel model offers 24 kmpl which is excellent indeed. The Honda City gets a better 6-speed transmission unit and the 119 BHP petrol engine along with the 99 BHP diesel mill. The Ciaz only has the 103 BHP petrol engine. The Honda City also gets some advanced features over the Ciaz including the electric sunroof, G-Meter for measuring gravitational force caused by your driving style, 7-inch TFT full color display, connected car features with Amazon Alexa remote compatibility and more. The City is more feature-packed from the base variant onwards.

The front seats have been scooped out for enhancing knee room while foot space has gone up by 26 mm by way of width and also in excess of 31 mm in the forward direction. This has been achieved in spite of the wheelbase staying the same at 2600 mm.

The new Honda City also flaunts several attractive exterior elements including full-LED headlights, integrated LED DRLs, signature chrome bar for the grille, 16-inch dual-tone diamond-cut alloy wheels and Z-shaped LED tail lights as well. There is a bigger electric sunroof along with brand new ORVMs and a shark fin antenna for company.

The interiors are more premium and the light beige colour does help in harnessing a feeling of extra space. Top-end variants get premier leather upholstery and cushion thickness is three times that of the earlier-generation version. There are individual headrests for rear passengers along with three-point seatbelts too. The central armrest is also foldable.

The interiors come packed with features including a 7-inch digital display unit, one-touch start/stop, ambient lighting, keyless entry, auto up/down functionality for the power windows, remote engine start, rear sunshade, follow-me-home lights and automatic headlamps.

The new Honda City also gets a brand new 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. It is the first car in the country to get Alexa remote compatibility and the first in the industry for this achievement as well. These are both standard features.

The new City comes with Honda Connect, the pioneering connected car technology that has several features. These include Find My Car, crash notifications, unauthorised access alerts and remote operations. Telematics services are offered for free over the first 5 years to customers by Honda.

The latest generation model uses an advanced high strength tensile steel body which ensures more safety, rigidity and superior riding experiences. The car has 6 airbags along with features like Agile Handling Assist, Vehicle Stability Assist, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, Honda Lane Watch Camera, Hill Start, ISOFIX rear seats, Brake Assist, ABS with EBD and a multi-angle rear camera among others.

The new City gets BS-VI compliant diesel and petrol engines. The latter is the DOHC 1.5 litre i-VTEC mill churning out 118 BHP and 145 Nm. The former is the i-DTEC 1.5 litre mill making 99 BHP and 200 Nm. Both are paired to 6-speepd manual transmission systems with the petrol mill getting an optional CVT automatic transmission unit as well.

The new-generation Honda City is priced at Rs. 11.28 lakh to Rs. 15.03 lakh for its petrol variants and between Rs. 12.88 lakh to Rs. 15.23 lakh for its diesel variants (all ex-showroom Delhi). The latest generation model sells alongside the earlier generation City. It takes on the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Rapid, Toyota Yaris and Volkswagen Vento in its segment.
