About KTM 200 Duke

KTM 200 Duke was launched in India back in 2012. The updated version of the same has been launched by KTM in 2020 has undergone several cosmetic and technical changes. But the best part is the engine performance remains unaffected.

This street bike is available in a single variant that meets the BS6 norms in the Indian market. The two new colour options of the 200 Duke in the market are Orange and White. The bike offers a comfortable seating position to both the rider and the pillion.

The new 200 Duke has a powerful engine that chunks out greater power and outstanding acceleration. This street bike is now bigger than the existing model but the ground clearance has gone down. The drive chain is now X-Ring type. The new suspension and braking system along with a dual-channel ABS unit makes the bike perfect for a race.

Some of the key features are the ABS unit, large fuel tank, position of the silencer close to the machine's overall centre of gravity, telescopic fork with high-quality upside-down suspension, and 280 mm diameter front disc brakes.

KTM 200 Duke Expert Review

KTM 200 Duke

The KTM 200 Duke carries the legacy and lineage of the popular KTM line-up of motorcycle models in the country. It is synonymous with a compelling design, sportier performance, and good features.

How is the design?

The KTM 200 Duke is quite similar to the 250 Duke in terms of its overall design and styling. The bike now looks and feels refreshing and edgier. The trellis frame has been revamped with an accompanying sub-frame (bolt-on) and there is also the halogen headlight with DRL and the tail lamp portion. There is also the chunky shroud for the tank which is derived from the KTM 250 Duke. The KTM 200 Duke has a bold presence on the road and comes with a slightly bigger fuel tank alongside. The new design of the tank and a spacious new seat are welcome additions.

How is the performance?

The KTM 200 Duke comes with a 199.5 cc engine that makes 25 hp and 19.3 Nm at 10,000 RPM and 8,000 RPM respectively. The engine has been beefed up for better performance with ECU re-mapping, a catalytic converter and spark plug with a heat rating that is higher. The engine refinement is excellent although the bike misses out on the previous sporty cum aggressive engine behaviour. This time things are calmer and more settled while 159 kg of kerb weight also means more weight. The maximum speed could be around 138 kmph. There is also dual-channel ABS while the bike offers precise and responsive performance overall. You do get impressive power on tap throughout the entire revving band till the limiter. Acceleration is naturally crisp once you pull out from the first gear.

How does the KTM 200 Duke ride?

The KTM 200 Duke rides in a more refined and smoother manner as compared to the older version. The vibrations have been reduced at higher speeds which is a good thing. The sporty nature remains although there is a more planted and settled feel while riding which enhances overall stability and confidence. The bike’s handling is top-notch with its sportier suspension system and ability to absorb all potholes and bumps neatly alongside. The bike feels excellently put together overall and that is a good thing for riders.

How comfortable is the KTM 200 Duke?

The WP suspension system offers good comfort for riders and the suspension can take care of bad roads and potholes with aplomb. The overall comfort levels and damping are also good enough and the bike does not induce fatigue generally.

How’s the tech?

Some of the tech features include dual-channel ABS which is a welcome feature, along with the LCD instrument console. This displays the gear position, speed, fuel gauge and RPMs alike.

How’s the mileage of the KTM 200 Duke?

The KTM 200 Duke offers fuel economy of 35 kmpl.

Is the KTM 200 Duke good value for money?

The KTM 200 Duke offers decent value for money, offering a sportier design, more refinement, and a punchy engine. It does make for a compelling proposition in its segment. The motorcycle also ensures ample brand value at this price point.

How is the after sales service?

The recommended service schedule/interval is a year or 7,500 kilometres, whichever comes earlier and also 15,000 kilometres or two years (whichever is earlier).

Which motorbikes compete in this segment?

The KTM 200 Duke slots into a highly competitive segment which has the Yamaha MT-15 that gets a smaller 155 cc engine. The 200 Duke also takes on the Pulsar NS200 against which it sports its advantages of more features, LED DRL, LED turn signals and tail lamp, along with a larger fuel tank. The NS200 comes with a single cylinder 199 cc engine which gets fuel injection. The engine makes 24.2 BHP and 18.5 Nm. However, the Bajaj Pulsar NS200 is more affordable than the KTM 200 Duke although the difference is not as huge as one would think.

Verdict (Is it value for money)

The KTM 200 Duke offers a good value proposition for buyers on several parameters or counts. For starters, you get a refined and powerful engine that is a treat to drive in most cases. Also, there is a good suspension system with a stylish design and overall road presence. Then there is a competitive price tag with good features, and you have a consummate value proposition for almost any buyer in this segment.
