More often than not, most of us fail to realise the importance of properly stowing luggage in a car's boot. As convenient it may seem to randomly put away luggage in a vehicle, how luggage is stowed can often influence the extent of damage in case of an mishap.

Here are a handful of tips to not only help utilise your car's boot space better, but to also ensure it helps mitigate risk in the event of an accident:

a. Place heavy bags or other items at the bottom of the boot. Make sure the said items have been pushed tightly against the backseat

b. The heavy items must also be kept from sliding backward - use other pieces of your luggage to help with that

c. Use lighter pieces of the luggage, like duffle bags and mats, to fill the empty space around the heavier items

d. Packing above the line of the backseat is a strict no-no since these items can bolt ahead during an accident, or if you brake suddenly, and injure passengers

e. Use the seatbelts in the rear row even if there are no passengers to provide increased stability

f. The warning triangle and the first-aid-kit must accessible at all times

g. Do not forget to adjust the tire pressure in accordance with the added load of the luggage
