The second-generation Mercedes-Benz GLA was launched in India in May 2021. First showcased in India at the 2020 Auto Expo, the GLA range was initially expected to be launched by mid-2020, however, the launch was postponed multiple times due to the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant lockdown. The new-generation model is offered in three options - GLA 200, GLA 220 d and GLA 220 d 4Matic. While the former two are offered as part of the Progressive Line variant, the top-end GLA 220 d 4Matic is offered in the sportier AMG Line variant.
The new-gen Mercedes-Benz GLA has been launched at an introductory price of Rs. 42.10 lakh to Rs. 46.70 lakh (ex-showroom, India). However, the company has also said that it will make an upward revision of up to Rs. 1.5 lakh from July 1, 2021. The GLA 200 is priced at Rs. 42.10 lakh, the GLA 220 d at Rs. 43.70 lakh, and the top-spec GLA 220 d 4Matic at Rs. 46.70 lakhs (all prices, ex-showroom, India). In India, it mainly competes with the BMW X1, Audi Q2, and the Volvo XC40.
Visually, the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA looks a bit more butch now compared to its predecessor, thanks to the sculpted lines on the bonnet and sides. Like other models in the A-Class range, the top-end trim will get the signature diamond-stud pattern grille with a chrome slat at the centre and the sweptback LED headlamps with integrated LED DRLs. The rear section too gets all-new LED taillamps, sculpted boot lid, spoiler and a beefy bumper.
Inside, the SUV now comes with a new cabin featuring a large single unit display with split function for infotainment and instrumentation. The former gets the touchscreen function and the MBUX infotainment system with a voice command function. Other features include wireless charging, a multifunctional steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, and Mercedes' Pre-Safe safety package.
Under the hood, the new GLA offers both petrol and diesel engine options, both sourced from the A-Class Limousine. While the former is 1.3-litre petrol that makes 161 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque, the oil burner is a 2.0-litre engine that makes 188 bhp and 400 Nm of peak torque. The petrol unit is mated to a 7-speed DCT unit, while the diesel engine comes with an 8-speed G-tronic automatic torque converter unit.
